This article in Time magazine has got it dead right:

As Moscow Advances, U.S. Allies Look Warily to Trump for Clarity

Putin is playing a chess game with his pawns and knights while distracting the West. He has no interest in ISIS, Syrian rebels, or the Crimean people but has his eyes on Europe. He wants to break the EU and NATO and he is achieving his goal.

Putin’s aims are the ports of Crimea and Syria with access to the Mediterranean and he is now focusing also on Montenegro. He has stimulated the rise of nationalism in the UK, and the USA and soon to follow will be France (Marine Le Pen has promised to leave NATO), the Netherlands, and Germany. Similarly, influencing Eastern European countries such as Hungary, Bulgaria, and other former Eastern Bloc “members”. He continues to test NATO resolve with forays into Estonia and Eastern Ukraine.

    Montenegrin authorities said they thwarted an October election day attempt by Serb and Russian nationalists to take over parliament, assassinate then-prime minister Milo Djukanovic and install pro-Russian leadership to prevent Montenegro from joining NATO.
    The Russians, identified as Eduard Shishmakov and Vladimir Popov, allegedly coordinated the operation from neighboring Serbia. They were allowed to return to Russia despite acknowledgment by Serbian officials that they operated from Serbia with encrypted mobile phones, and are at large.

    1. US President Donald Trump signed off on Montenegro’s accession to NATO on , removing a potential hurdle to the Balkan nation becoming the alliance’s 29th member.

      This takes one of Putin’s castles out of the game. Well done!

  2. Is the Turkey/Netherlands dispute another ploy by Putin to galvanize the far-right voters in Holland? I don’t believe Turkey has the capability to hack Twitter to display all of the Nazi symbols but Russia certainly does (and Erdogan has been cozying up to Putin recently). We’ll see at the end of voting how successful they are. One thing’s for sure, we must be very suspicious of any activity of this sort so near an election.
